Knight Templar Sergeant-brother

Only those Templars of high social status were 'Knights'. Brothers of lower status were called 'sergeants' and although they also wore the Templar's distinguishing red cross on the left breast of their mantle, the mantle itself was black. ( Priest-brothers wore a brown mantle ). As befitting their lower status, the sergeant-brothers were more lightly armoured than the knights, often wearing a combination of chain and leather armour. Sergeant-brothers also typically wore a 'kettle' hat rather than the full helmet of the knights.
