Constellation of Orion (from Lundy Island)

significance of Orion - Orion and Elen.

In 2000 BC the seven stars which make up the constellation of Orion rose on the following bearings from Lundy.

Betelgeuse. This star, with a magnitude of (?), rose at an angle of 94.2

Bellatrix. This star, with a magnitude of (?), rose at an angle of 99.6'. The chapel of St. Elen (see elsewhere) at Croyde is on a bearing of 99.28355281

Mintaka This star, with a magnitude of (?), rose at an angle of 109.1 St. Anne's chapel or the chapel in the sands stands on Braunton Burrows where the Rivers Taw and Torridge join. It lies on a bearing of 109.3589942 from Lundy. It faces Instow and Appledore. There are traditions that it used to carry a beacon for shipping. There is a modern lighthouse close by.

Alnilam. This star, with a magnitude of (?), rose at an angle of 109.8 . St. John's Chapel at Tawstock nr Barnstaple, which lies on a bearing of 110.132105 from Lundy, was at one time a chapel of the Knights of the Temple. A fact commemorated in the name of the nearby farm of Templeton. There is also nearby St. Michael's School.

Alnitak. This star, with a magnitude of (?), rose at an angle of 110.6 Instow reputedly derives it's name 110.8819975 from St. John - Brychan

Saiph. This star, with a magnitude of (?), rose at an angle of 122.2 The church of St. Elen , Abbotsham (Brychan) lies on a bearing from Lundy of 121.5413154'.

Rigel. This star, with a magnitude of (?), rose at an angle of 124.5
