The 'Priory' story was a clever hoax by a group of Frenchmen, whose front man Pierre Plantard convinced the writers of 'Holy Blood, Holy Grail' and the story took off from there... Of course, there is the theory that the hoax story is a hoax to hide the real Priory of Sion! )

"There was a secret order behind the Knight's Templar, which created the Templars as its military and administrative arm. "Baigent, Leigh and Lincoln uncovered evidence of a conspiracy surrounding the Order of Sion (sometimes referred to as the Order of Our Lady of Sion), which involved a number of families from Champagne. At least two alleged Grand Masters of the Prieure de Sion showed an involvement in Johannite-related activities. The allegation that Hughes de Payens was secretly a Johannite was repeated in the nineteenth century, first by the Vatican and later by the Theosophists.

"The true version of the history of Jesus, and the early Christianity was imparted to Hugh de Payens, by the Grand-Pontiff of the Order of the Temple (of the Nazarene or Johannite sect), one named Theocletes, after which it was learned by some Knights in Palestine, from the higher and more intellectual members of the St. John sect, where were initiated into its mysteries. Freedom of intellectual thought and the restoration of one and universal religion was their secret object.  The story of the Priory of Zion starts with the departure, after the crucifixion, of Mary Magdalene from the holy land. She set sail, with some companions, to the region of Marseilles in the South of France. One of Mary's companions was Joseph of Arimathea the guardian of the Holy Grail - the San Greal. Sometime, either before or after this, Mary had a child. (get more details from Lundy notes)
(According to the advocates of this version 'San Greal' - 'Holy Grail' is an incorrect transliteration and it should be 'Sang Real' - 'Holy Blood'. Hence the title of the bestselling book by Baigent, Lincoln & Leigh.)
The Merovingians took power in France about 405AD during the collapse of the western Roman Empire, when Childeric I became the first non Roman ruler of Gaul. The founder of the dynasty, Merovia, could supposedly trace his ancestry back to Mary and Joseph of Arimathea. Dagobert I is supposed to have married a Visigothic princess Gisele in ? at Ragu? joining the Merovingian and Visigothic bloodlines and cementing a claim to be ruler of France.

Historical Note. - The Order of Our Lady of Mount Zion was founded in Jerusalem. When Jerusalem fell to Saladin in ? the order relocated to Acre. After the fall of Acre the order moved to Sicily where it was absorbed by the Jesuits in 1617.

The Priory of Sion has been proved beyond any reasonable doubt to have been a complicated hoax primarily perpetrated by Pierre Plantard, with some help, The most visible of the 'victims' were Baigent, Leigh and Lincoln. who propagated the myth in their bestselling books 'Holy Blood, Holy Grail' and 'Messianic Legacy.'
